UNDERSTANDING CHILDREN’S EMOTIONS: VIEWS FROM NEUROSCIENCE AND CLINICAL WORK

Dr. Seth Pollak will share his landmark research on the mechanisms of emotional development with a focus on neuroscience and behavioral endocrinology.
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Keynote Speaker Seth Pollak  “Early Childhood Trauma and the Emotional Brain”

This conference will consider children’s emotional development from the perspectives of both neuroscience and clinical work.

The morning session will focus on what neuroscience has learned about emotional growth. How is the brain shaped by early experiences? How can clinicians provide a therapeutic environment that promotes children’s comfort with feelings?

The afternoon session will address the role of parents. Our speakers, in dialogue with one another and the community, will discuss how parents can strengthen and support their children’s emotional health.

Learning Objectives: After attending this conference, participants should be able to:

1. Describe how the brain is shaped and refined by children’s early emotional and social experiences.

2. Demonstrate the long-term effects of toxic and stressful family interactions on the brain and behavior.

3. Explain the neurobiological and evolutionary perspectives on the development of emotion regulation.

Who should attend: Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, mental health professionals, nurses, teachers, graduate students.

An informal meeting for those interested in the WCSPP Training Programs will be held during the lunch break.
