CHALLENGES IN CHILD TREATMENT, Saturday, December 1, 2012, Presenter: Michèle M. Bartnett, Ph.D.
It is widely accepted that children learn to create meaning through play. Much has been written about the importance of understanding the representations children communicate through imaginative play in child psychotherapy. Therapists expect that when children enter a therapy room equipped with a variety of toys they will engage in play with the therapist. This does not always happen. Dr. Bartnett will discuss the kinds of challenges that emerge when the child defies the therapist’s expectations and does not take part fully in symbolic play. To what extent has the youngster’s capability to engage in meaningful fantasy and symbolic play been compromised? Does this represent a defensive maneuver or something else? Dr. Bartnett will describe the processes that result in the emergence of symbolization in children. The clinical situation will be emphasized with consideration of what keeps children from participating in creative play. Treatment implications will be explored. Workshop participants are invited to provide vignettes from their own child treatments.

MITPP, chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, offers three certificate programs: a three year program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with Adults, a two year program in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy and a program leading to New York State licensure in Psychoanalysis for those with Masters Degrees who don’t qualify for licensure in the established mental health professions. Social Workers may qualify for the LCSW through their training at MITPP. Matriculants see patients at the Metropolitan Center for Mental Health, which is licensed by the Office of Mental Health. MITPP’s low tuition of $1,000 per semester includes all supervision and coursework. Courses are also offered on a non-matriculated basis.
