Jay Greenberg: OTHERNESS AND THE ANALYSIS OF ACTION
In recent years the attention of psychoanalysts in all parts of the world, working within a wide range of theoretical traditions, has turned away from using their analysands’ free associations to uncover repressed mental contents. Their attention has been increasingly directed toward engagement with pre-verbal or non-verbal expressions of proto-experience that could not have been repressed because it was never symbolically encoded. Different traditions emphasize different ways in which these proto-experiences manifest themselves in the analytic session. Regardless of how this is understood, however, the analysis of action presents specific technical problems, especially involving differences in the way that action is understood when viewed from “inside” and “outside.” Using clinical material, I will address these problems and will suggest some ways of working with them within an analytic frame.
