Some 80,000 Ethiopian Jews came to Israel in a surreptitious airlift beginning in 1991, rescuing them from the war-torn country. From 2007-2010, the presenter worked with and studied forty-six children and their families in a small town near the Gaza border. This population was unique for a developmental study: Most came from subsistence pre-literate agricultural villages near Gondar, almost all the mothers were married by thirteen, were tattooed with crosses, and many had facial scarification. All the six-year olds were either born in Israel or arrived as infants. The presenter will describe the inner lives of these children, their attachment and their parents, as well as the children’s sense of identity. While living in the same space, the children and their parents often occupied different worlds. In general, girls functioned far better than boys on all measures. There will be discussion of the high prevalence in Insecure, Anxious Attachment in both parents and children, as well as description of how some mothers literally see the world from a different perspective.

1. Better understand the life course and backgrounds of Ethiopian Jews who come from substinence, preliterate origins.
2. Learn about attachment measures in parents and children.
