CONTEMPORARY FREUDIAN PERSPECTIVES ON THE MODERN KLEINIANS (6 Weeks)
INSTRUCTORS: Naama Kushnir-Barash, PhD, Neal Vorus, PhD
This two-part course, which is part of an ongoing series that will cover different theorists each academic year, addresses the theoretical contributions of two Contemporary Kleinians, Michael Feldman and Ronald Britton.
In the first three sessions (November 14,28, and [Tuesday] December 4, @8:30pm) Dr. Kushnir-Barash will focus on Michael Feldman. These sessions will discuss his close observation of patients and their moment to moment dealings with the analytic situation, including the ways in which they project inner objects and unconscious phantasies into the analyst. In the subsequent three sessions (December 12,19,and January 2, @8:30pm) Dr. Vorus will focus on Ronald Britton and his writings on belief in relation to psychic reality. Britton’s debt to Bion will be discussed, along with his writings on the development of ‘triangular space” and the relationship of this concept to Freudian conceptions of “mentallization” and “meaning space.” The relationship of these ideas to psychic reality, subjectivity and objectivity will also be reviewed, including Britton’s clinical approach to facilitating the capacity of patients to experience phantasies in the realm of the imaginary, rather than the simply factual.
