In her presentation, Dr. Casey will present new scientific findings that suggest that the adolescent brain is not “all gasoline, no brakes, and no steering wheel,” but rather an essential phase of typical brain development. If indeed the objective of adolescence is to gain independence from parents, then providing opportunities for adolescents to engage in new responsibilities is essential. Without opportunities and experiences to help shape an adolescent’s brain and behavior optimally, the objectives of this developmental phase will not be easily met.
BJ Casey, Ph.D., is the Sackler Professor for Developmental Psychobiology at Weill Cornell Medical College where she holds appointments in the Departments of Psychiatry, Neurology, and Neuroscience. She directs the Sackler Institute and is a world leader in pediatric neuroimaging. Her program of research focuses on behavioral and emotional regulation, particularly their development, disruption, and neurobiological basis. She has served on several advisory boards including the NIMH Board of Scientific Counselors, the Scientific Advisory Board for NARSAD, the National Research Council Board of Children, Youth and Families, and the IOM Committee for Assessing Juvenile Justice Reform. She is the recipient of multiple awards and author of nearly 150 scientific publications.
