The History of Psychiatry from the Patient’s Viewpoint Fred Sander, M.D. First Tuesday of the month 7:30 – 9 pm October 2, 2012 – May 7, 2013 (8 sessions) Fee: $200
Patients’ autobiographies are used to illustrate different eras and approaches to the treatment of the mentally ill. Recurrent historical themes are highlighted and provide a perspective on the current state of psychiatry.
Material includes the journals of the sophist Aelius Aristides, treated at the temple of Aesclepios in the first c. AD, and patients of Mesmer, Puysegur and Charcot as described in Ellenberger’s The Discovery of the Unconscious. These are followed by Freud’s cases of Schreber and the Wolf-man, each of whom described their own treatments. Later works may include Hannah Greene’s I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, Mary Barnes, a patient treated in R.D. Laing’s Kingsley Hall community, and Clifford Beers’ A Mind that Found Itself. More recent material may include Kate Jameson’ s An Unquiet Mind, Dawn Skorczewski’s An Accident of Hope, and a study by Martin Orne of the audio tapes of the treatment of the poet, Anne Sexton. The Family Crucible, by August Napier and Carl Whitaker, is a composite of the treatment of a number of families and may also be included.
Participants will select the specific material to be read as there is more than can be covered in 8 meetings.
Dr. Sander has been a pioneer in the application of analytic theory to couple and family therapy. His first book, “Individual and Family Therapy: Toward an Integration,” was published in 1979 by Jason Aronson, and his recent book, “Created in Our Own Image.com,” published in January, is about the Pygmalion myth. Dr. Sander is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Weill-Cornell Medical School, and on the faculty of NYPSI.

Educational Objectives: After taking this course, participants will be able to:
1) Identify and evaluate transference and counter transferences in autobiographical accounts of treatments.
2) Recognize the role of history in famous cases, e.g. “The Wolf-man.”
3) Identify the role of certain patients’ contributions to psychotherapy.
Who Should Attend: Mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and licensed psychotherapists).
