A CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR NYPSI’S LEON KUPFERSTEIN MEMORIAL AWARD FOR INNOVATION IN PSYCHOANALYSIS
The New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute (NYPSI) formally announces the first call for nominations for the Leon Kupferstein Memorial Award for Innovation in Psychoanalysis.
This award was established in 2012 in the name of Dr. Leon Kupferstein, a graduate and past-President of the New York Psychoanalytic Society (2001 – 2003) and is to be issued every three years to honor innovation in the field of psychoanalysis. Dr. Kupferstein was a dedicated student of Sigmund Freud, but also possessed a firm belief that the art and science of psychoanalysis must move forward and respond to new discoveries about the human condition.
As Freud was self-correcting, Dr. Kupferstein worked to remind analysts of the imperative to continually examine their discipline with a critical eye. The Leon Kupferstein Memorial Award for Innovation in Psychoanalysis intends to honor the work of those in the field who use the tools of psychoanalysis to push our understanding of the human mind to its frontiers, rewarding thinkers and healers who publish papers or books that support innovation in psychoanalytic practice and theory.
The inaugural recipient of NYPSI’s Leon Kupferstein Memorial Award for Innovation in Psychoanalysis was to Kupferstein’s mentor and colleague Dr. Charles Brenner, in honor of his long-standing commitments and considerable body of work that continues to contribute to the modern understanding of the value of psychoanalysis.
NYPSI’s Leon Kupferstein Memorial Award for Innovation in Psychoanalysis will be presented to a living person whose innovative or influential contribution has allowed psychoanalysis to move forward. There are no restrictions regarding nationality or country of origin except that published work must exist in English and all documents and the nomination must be submitted in English. Both NYPSI members as well as non-NYPSI members may be considered for nomination.
In this call for nominations (either on behalf of another or self-nomination), please submit the following:
1. A 300 word presentation which explains how this individual’s contribution exemplifies the aims of the award;
2. An updated Curriculum Vitae;
3. One relevant citation of a paper or other publication.
This award is sponsored by the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute and is accompanied by a $1,000 honorarium.
Donations to the Kupferstein Memorial Award Fund may be made by check to NYPSI with Kupferstein Memorial Award in the memo. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent provided by law.
Please submit nominations by September 30, 2012. The award recipient will be announced in January 2013.
