Presents a screening of A LITERARY EXAMPLE OF SOUL MURDER: JULES RENARD’S “POIL DE CARROTE”
followed by a psychoanalytic exploration by Leonard Shengold, M.D.

“Poil de Carrote” (Carrot-Top) is an autobiographical short novel (1894) by the great French writer, the red-haired Jules Renard about his miserable childhood. It illustrates the killing of the capacity to feel joy in another human being which is one way to define what Shengold has called “Soul Murder,” a term well known in psychiatry because it was used as an accusation against his “persecutor” by Schreber, the paranoid subject of one of Freud’s famous case histories. The 1925 silent film of “Poil de Carrotte”, by Julien Duvivier, differs a bit from the book, but is a masterpiece in itself and vividly portrays the relationship of Poil to his parents and siblings.

Dr. Shengold is a training analyst and former Director of the Psychoanalytic Institute at NYU, and a clinical professor of psychiatry at New York University Medical School.  He is the author of many papers and 8 books including Soul Murder, Soul Murder Revisited  and Haunted by Parents.  He will publish two new books later this year.

Dr. Shengold’s books are for sale at NYPSI’s Bookstore and will be available for signing by Dr. Shengold after the event.
