Anisha, a nine-year-old, was originally referred for treatment by the school for her attention-seeking and disruptive behavior, as well as for her problems with authority and learning. Anisha initially presented with a fragmented environment, a tenuous sense of attachment, and pain and rage about her place in the family. After two years of twice-weekly psychotherapy in a school setting, a greater sense of security within the treatment relationship led to the emergence of Anisha’s more positive sense of self, which in turn began to serve as the foundation for greater object-relatedness.

The presentation will highlight how attachment developed through the survival of the relationship between the therapist and the patient, paving the way to a greater capacity for emotional growth and significantly improved functioning in all areas of her life. Therapeutic interventions will be discussed in response to the patient’s needs, as they emerged in the play material, and in the transference and counter-transference.

Susan S.Berger, Psy.D., Co-Director of IPTAR’s Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Program, who supervised Dr. De Lardemelle’s work, will comment briefly on both treatment and the supervisory process.

Cecile De Lardemelle, Psy.D., is an advanced candidate in IPTAR’s Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Program. She has been working in IPTAR’s on-site school program for the past three years.
