The Kindly Ones by John Littell Discussed by Robert April, M.D.
This extraordinary work, which encountered brilliant success in France under the title ‘les Bienveillantes’, earned the Prix Goncourt in 2006, and sparked considerable interest in France. Many volumes have been written about it, including reviews by two analysts, Andre Green and Julia Kristeva. It is a brilliant attempt to approach the study of the Holocaust through the mind of one of its perpetrators. Written as a confession by the narrator – a fictional Gestapo officer – it approaches the psychology of evil both on a historical level (the details of the organization of the Wehrmacht are extremely well researched) and on a personal level mixing dreams fantasies and perversions, which both shock and enlighten the reader. Rarely has a description of evil been portrayed in such detail questioning whether all of us in certain circumstances might also be caught up in its web.
As the book is over 600 pages attendees are strongly urged to read at least the first hundred pages. Actual passages of the book will be examined in detail.
The English version The Kindly Ones is available. Critics in this country generally wrote negative reviews.
Robert April, M.D. is a practicing neurologist. Dr. April earned an MA in French literature at NYU and specializes in the novel of the 19th century, including Zola.
