Family histories, IBM in WWII, art and music and the brain from Sasha Rolde on InternationalPsychoanalysis.net

*Dear colleagues,

There is much activity on the international psychoanalytic website, dovetailing with similar kind of rising ante everywhere – whether it finally be winter in the northeast, heat in the Republican primaries, tornadoes in the Midwest, elections in APsaA or horrors in the middle east.*** I will attempt to guide you on the website with some suggestions of my own, as well as with the usual list of contents for this week.

To begin with my choices:

*1) A century later we continue to learn about Sigmund Freud’s family life.* This week* I* am moved by the extremely short and tragic life story of S. Freud’s niece, nee Marta , children’s book illustrator, Tom Seidmann-Freud (she took a man’s name – read about the reason) whose surreal, whimsical art was saved by her daughter and grandchildren.* It is a testimony not just to this artist, but to the strength of her offspring and the entire family. PTSD does not always lead to disaster.

2)* Freud, his family and the history of psychoanalysis are intextricable joined and the association is explored by Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen and Sonu Shamdasani in* “the Freud Files – an inquiry into the History of Psychoanalysis”.* Reading the excerpt on the website (published in the Atlantic Monthly) does give one pause and raises the question of what psychoanalysis really is, how it became so widely disseminated, and at what price.

* 3)* this seems to be a week of “tales of famous families”* You may be interested in that of Max Eitingon as told by Tom Segev in The Makings of History / Tales of a nuclear family.

 * 4)* Please note the phasing out of psychiatric services at the Cedars-Sinai Hospital, foreshadowing the scary prospect of psychiatry getting less and less funding in the future and training fewer if any residents

**5)* Edwin Black, the author of IBM and the Holocaust as well as of the Transfer Agreement ( the research for which was substantially added to by a very close friend of mine, a Canadian sociology professor) has come up with more evidence in “IBM in Auschwitz: New Documents” He says on the RSN website:

“the documents portray with crystal clarity the personal involvement and micro-management of IBM president Thomas J. Watson in the company’s co-planning and co-organizing of Hitler’s campaign to destroy the Jews.

IBM’s twelve-year alliance with the Third Reich was first revealed in my book IBM and the Holocaust, published simultaneously in 40 countries in February 2001. It was based on some 20,000 documents drawn from archives in seven countries. IBM never denied any of the information in the book; and despite thousands of media and communal requests, as well as published articles, the company has remained silent.”

*If you read the article, please also glance at the comments below it, which I found extremely interesting.* They range from immediate refusal to believe what Black says to outright denial of the Holocaust.* To us as psychoanalysts, this should give some food for thought as to how and why some people cannot assimilate evidence which is in front of their eyes – in this case it is possible that it was the enormity of the crime, the fear it engenders, etc.

XI.** BOOK LAUNCH: CITY WITHIN A CITY by Basia Berman

*FRIDAY MARCH 2, 2012 1:00 to 2:30 P.M.*

at YIVO Institute for Jewish Research,

*15 West 16th Street, NY, NY 10011

I would like to describe this state within a state, or rather city within a city, this most underground of all underground communities, whose members met with each other, worked and talked in the midst of a population which didn’t suspect anything; where every street, every coffee shop, every tram stop called to mind dozens of unique adventures. Every name was false, every word that was uttered carried a double meaning, and every telephone conversation was more encrypted than the secret diplomatic documents of embassies.”

This diary was written in Polish when Basia (Batya), and her husband Dr. Adolf- Abraham Berman, lived on the Aryan side of Warsaw-the part designated by the Nazis for Polish Christians only-and led a secret network helping thousands of Jews to hide and survive.

SPEAKERS:_
