Present a screening of
John Huston’s The Dead followed by a psychoanalytic exploration by NYPSI member Dr. Francis Baudry
of how James Joyce’s short story “The Dead” has been converted into the film and what is gained and lost through that translation.
The Dead is the last film that Huston directed and it was released posthumously in 1987. His daughter, Angelica Huston, stars in the film, and his son, Tony Huston, wrote the screenplay, which was nominated for an Academy Award. The film is based on Joyce’s masterpiece “The Dead” from his short story collection Dubliners. Joyce (1882-1941) wrote “The Dead” when he was 23 years old!
