Michele Press, M.D. discusses Jacob Arlow’s Unconscious Fantasy and Disturbances of Conscious Experience (1969)*
This discussion will be a review of the concept of unconscious fantasy as explored and enlarged by Jacob Arlow, a consummate theorist and clinician whose writings are straightforward and yet brilliant. Unconscious fantasy in Arlow’s hands owes a great deal to Freud’s original concepts, which he streamlines and refines. Arlow builds his case meticulously; the clinical theory of unconscious fantasy requires specific technical recommendations especially in the handling of transference. Arlow was also building toward a holistic theory of the mind. His analysis of fantasy gives way not to parts or structures but to layers of meaning and abstract representations.
Dr. Michele Press is the Director of the Post-Graduate Division, NYPSI. She is on the faculty at NYPSI and is Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, New York University Medical Center.
