Queen Sheba’s Children in Israel
Nathan M. Szajnberg, M.D.
This is a three-year study of Ethiopian-Israeli six year-old children and their families in a small town north of the Negev desert, near Gaza. As a work in progress, I will present one chapter of an upcoming book to be published by Routledge. I will focus on the children’s pictures and their stories as a way of glimpsing their inner lives, their identities and the stories with which they live. I will give a brief overview of the study: all our parents were born and raised in subsistence agricultural rural villages in pre-literate settings. Most mothers were married by thirteen; most had 5-9 children. I assessed the attachment of the primary parent and the child, as well as visited in the classrooms, playgrounds and homes. I would like to get a sense of the clarity with which I am presenting the children’s inner lives.
Educational Objectives:
1. Become acquainted with Ethiopian/Israeli identities and vicissitudes.
2. Learn how these six-year old children see their worlds.
Dr. Szajnberg is the Wallerstein Research Fellow in Psychoanalysis and formerly a Freud Professor at the Hebrew University. He is now in private practice in New York. Dr. Szajnberg received his BA and MD degrees at the University of Chicago and psychoanalytic training at the St. Louis Institute.
