What constitutes therapeutic success in the psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic work with adolescents?

Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011
8:30 p.m. in the NYPSI Auditorium

The author presents several case vignettes of both “successful” and “unsuccessful” adolescent treatments, with a detailed focus on two cases, one highly successful and one frequently interrupted, and seemingly unsuccessful. She explores the diagnostic, developmental, familial and environmental issues that may contribute to the varied outcome of adolescent work. These vignettes lead her to question the definition of success and the appropriate goals of treatment in the midst of adolescent development. Finally she examines whether modes of therapeutic action in adolescent analysis differ from adult analysis, and assesses the need for modified therapeutic technique with some or all adolescents.

Educational Goals:

1. To be able assess therapeutic goals in working with adolescents, in light of developmental, diagnostic and environmental issues.

2. To be able to predict factors increasing or decreasing chance of success.
