Guided Activity Workbooks for Child Disaster Victims

Two members of the American Psychoanalytic Association worked on this downloadable mental health resource.  It is part of an internationally used
series of event-focused guided activity workbook.  Over sixty thousand children and their thousands of caregivers have used our nonprofit agency’s workbooks.  Facing disasters in earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, fire storms and wars can be a tremendous mental health stressor, and there are few children’s resources which have had any testing of feasibility and outcomes.

The Children’s Psychological Health Center of San Francisco and the Columbia University Dept. of Child Psychiatry’s Foster Care Study Unit were both initiated by psychoanalytically informed studies under my leadership. Both services have considerable data about the favorable outcomes of using
personal life history books to organize reflective networks which assist
children’s coping with stressors.

The Disaster Relief section of www.childrenspsychological.org has free
downloads of the whole series our agency’s disaster-focused workbooks.

Evidence for effectiveness is on the same web site in the Disaster Relief
Section.  Please encourage schools, disaster relief organizations and
governmental authorities to contact me at 415 292 7119 or by email to obtain large quantities of hardcopies for use in the current flood disasters.

If homelessness of very young children is your focus, our agency can assist
in training preschool teachers and shelter workers in psychoanalytically
informed approaches helpful to homeless families with preschoolers.  Our
experiences in Seattle and San Francisco show there can be a useful synergy
between psychoanalytic psychotherapy and preschool education.  Homeless children can benefit substantially.
