JOHN LENNON, MICROWAVE OVENS, AND THE ENACTED DIMENSION OF ANALYTIC PROCESS
Presenter: Gil Katz, Ph.D.
This lecture will discuss the concept of enactment, illustrating what the author calls the enacted dimension of analytic process-a continuously evolving second dimension of analytic treatment that exists alongside of and interwoven with the treatment’s verbal content. Contemporary Freudian and Relational/Intersubjective perspectives on enactments will be distinguished-in particular, the relationship between enactments and analytic technique, and the meaning of the concept “co-creation.” The centrality of the enacted dimension in the treatment of patients with a history of early trauma will be discussed and illustrated via two clinical vignettes. Support for these ideas from current research in cognitive neuroscience will be presented.
Gil Katz, Ph.D. is a Faculty Member and Supervisor in MITPP’s Adult Program. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychology, Faculty member, and Supervising Analyst at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, and a Faculty member, Fellow (Training and Supervising Analyst), and former Dean of Training at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR).
