CLASSIC PAPERS SERIES
Tuesday, March 15, 2011, 8:30 pm
Edith McNutt, M.D. & Josephine Wright, M.D.
Discuss 2 Papers: Narcissistic Object Choice in Women* & Pathologic Forms of Self-Esteem Regulation* by Annie Reich
Annie Reich was particularly known for her contributions in the field of narcissism, and was one of the first writers to revisit Freud’s ideas about narcissism through the lens of the new analytic ego psychology. She brought to her work on narcissism the benefit of the growing understanding of pre-oedipal development provided by the burgeoning field of child analysis and analytic child observation. The two papers to be discussed, both presented originally at the NYPSI, were eight years apart and thus reveal her evolving understanding of narcissistic development and pathology. The second paper is a very complex and thorough study of self esteem and narcissism, and can be seen to be drawing on the concurrent work of Edith Jacobson in her “The Self and the Object World”. These classical papers remain important today in any clinical or theoretical discussions of narcissism.
Dr. McNutt is a Training and Supervising Analyst at NYPSI.
Dr. Wright is on the faculty of NYPSI and co-teaches a course on the Evolution of the Theories of Narcissism and the Self. She is also on the faculty of the Berkshire Psychoanalytic Institute.
