Interpretation & Construction – the work of Transformation in Psychoanalytic Practice.
E. Kris’ Contributions on the Preconscious Thought Processes in the Analyst

Jorge Canestri, M.D.

Training & Supervising Analyst, Italian Psychoanalytic Association & Argentine Psychoanalytic Association.  European Editor, International Journal of Psychoanalysis.  Recipient, 2004 Mary S. Sigourney Award

In this presentation I deal with interpretations and constructions in contemporary psychoanalysis. I discuss the two main bases of the Freudian theory that justify the possibility of interpreting the patient’s clinical material. The principal contributions of post-Freudian psychoanalysis on interpretation and construction are briefly mentioned. The concept of construction is linked to the Freudian idea of not translated traces and to the Bionian concept of transformation. Lastly, I discuss the contributions of Ernst Kris (1950, 1951) dealing with the preconscious thought processes in the analyst. I link his ideas with my research on the meaning of implicit theories in psychoanalytic work. Important theoretical advances in the management of non-neurotic disorders by English and French psychoanalysts will be discussed. The clinical consequences of their approach will be explored. A number of vignettes will illustrate their point of view. The author will show how these advances may be integrated in mainstream analysis.

Join us for light refreshments from 7:30 to 8 p.m.
