The Affects and their Pleasure-Unpleasure Qualities, in Relation to the Psychic Discharge Processes*
by Edith Jacobson
Jacobson’s analytic career was long (1925 to 1978) and varied. Her 1953 paper marks the median point of Jacobson’s career and describes her complex theory of affects from the point of view of the structural theory. It lays the foundation of a normal developmental psychoanalytic theory of affects which later facilitated Jacobson’ s approach to the clinical understanding of pathological moods. The theoretical and clinical roots of this paper will be traced back to Jacobson’s earlier career in Germany. The enduring value of this paper will be underscored.
