Full and Empty: Recognizing Painful Affects at the Core of Eating Disorders

Eating disorders have become ubiquitous in our society. At their heart, eating disorders are symptomatic efforts to keep painful affects out of awareness. This is an unconscious connection, which has to patiently and thoughtfully be brought into a patient’s awareness. Through the examination of case material this workshop will demonstrate how the patient’s inner life is manifested through the concrete behavior of eating disorders such as self-starvation, binging, exercising and other obsessional rituals. These behaviors serve as mental organizers and are interwoven into the patients’ character structure. The nature of the transference and the therapist’s ability to hold and contain unmanageable split-off affects will be discussed, as well as specific techniques for creating and sustaining a therapeutic alliance. Participants are welcome to bring vignettes for discussion.

MITPP, chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, offers three certificate programs: a three year program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with Adults, a two year program in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy and a program leading to New York State licensure in Psychoanalysis for those with Masters Degrees who don’t qualify for licensure in the established mental health professions. Social Workers enrolled at MITPP may arrange to qualify for the LCSW. Matriculants see patients at the Metropolitan Center for Mental Health, which is licensed by the Office of Mental Health. MITPP’s low tuition of $1,000 per semester includes all supervision and coursework. Courses are also offered on a non-matriculated basis.
Applications are now being accepted for the Spring 2011 semester.
