EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
The goal of the symposium is to discuss the ways in which human beings employ deceit and dishonesty in the service of defense, drive gratification, conscious and unconscious manipulativeness, narcissism, and sadomasochism. Attention will also be paid to constitutional, early childhood and current life variables that contribute to tendencies towards lying, deceptiveness, the resulting implicit or explicit cruelty. Previously published findings, data from empirical research, and clinical material from psychoanalysis and psychotherapy of children and adults will be presented to highlight the various theoretical and technical issues involved.
