PSYCHOANALYTIC THEMES IN THE WORK OF JANE AUSTEN

This course will study Jane Austen’s writings using psychoanalytic knowledge and insights to uncover unconscious chords struck by her novels that have made them popular with successive generations of readers for over 200 years. The readings will include the novels Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, Mansfield Park, and discussions of other works if time permits.

Dr. Morris is a member of NYPSI and Columbia Psychoanalytic Center, and on the faculty of NPAP.  She has taught Psychosomatic Pathology at IPTAR, NPAP, and NYPSI Extension Division.  She also teaches in the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program of NYPSI.  She has written and lectured on infertility, adoption, and family pathology.  In her interest in applied psychoanalysis, she has focused on how medical problems have influenced the themes of great writers.
