For many years we have been importing Eastern healing ideas to the West; the reverse has been true only recently. Along with many other changes in Chinese culture and society, an interest in psychoanalytic theory and method has recently blossomed in China. Many European and American analysts have responded to these interests, sending teachers to lecture and supervise and using new technologies such as Skype when a corporeal presence is not possible. Elise Snyder is a leader in this effort. She has individually developed an American-Chinese Alliance of Psychoanalysts and Chinese mental health professionals (CAPA). The Westerners have volunteered to bring psychoanalytic knowledge to China and foster clinical expertise there. Her experience and that of her colleagues working in CAPA constitutes a fascinating story and one which can teach us about Chinese culture, the struggle to export psychoanalysis to other cultures and the universality of analytic and developmental theories.
We will begin the program by speaking with Dr Snyder on a variety of issues pertaining to her work in mainland China. After that, Dr. Cath will briefly present her experience supervising a Chinese psychiatrist on Sykpe.We will have the opportunity to discuss a range of issues including working with individuals with a different language and culture as well as utilizing the new remote technologies.
We encourage the many clinicians in our community with experience working in Asia or with Asian patients and/or students to attend and to take part actively in the discussion.
