Psychopathology as Terror Mismanagement
Sheldon Solomon, Ph.D.
Skidmore College

Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 8 – 9:30 pm
“Terror management theory posits that the unique awareness of death and tragedy renders human beings prone to debilitating terror, and that this terror is managed by a dual-component anxiety buffer consisting of a cultural worldview and self-esteem.”
Sheldon Solomon, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at Skidmore College, is an experimental social psychologist with interests that include the nature of self, consciousness, and social behavior.  Dr. Solomon will discuss his work on exploring the effects of the uniquely human awareness of death on individual and social behavior, specifically terror management. He has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the Ernest Becker Foundation.  He was recently featured in the award winning documentary film Flight from Death: The Quest for Immortality.  He is co-author of In the Wake of 9/11: The Psychology of Terror.
