Skin Deep: Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Body Modification

We invite you to attend the Spring Symposium presented by the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis in New Haven, CT on May 1st entitled: ‘Skin Deep: Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Body Modification.’  Dr. Janice Lieberman, a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst in New York City and author of, Body Talk: Looking and Being Looked at In Psychotherapy (New Jersey: Jason Aronson, 2000) and Professor Alessandra Lemma, author of Under The Skin: A Psychoanalytic Study of Body Modification (London: Routledge, 2010) and head of psychology for the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust in London will present papers. They will consider bodies and individual’s experiences of, fantasies about and underlying conflicts related to, why some people choose reconstructive surgical procedures to modify their bodies. Clinical case vignettes will be presented by an Ear Nose and Throat surgeon, Dr. David Astrachan, and a plastic surgeon, Dr. Deborah Pan.
