As psychiatric medications have come more and more into everyday use, psychotherapists need to have an understanding of the basic principles of psychopharmacology and the uses and problems associated with the more commonly prescribed medications. The goals of this workshop are twofold: to increase the comfort level of LMSW and LCSW practitioners in working collaboratively with psychiatrists regarding medication management; and to help them guide their clients through the referral, consultation and medication management process. Psychodynamic and practical issues related to the collaborative treatment process and the giving and receiving of psychiatric medications will be integral to the course. A combination of lectures and sharing of clinical experiences will be used to achieve these goals.

Learning Objectives: On completion of the course participants should have a basic understanding of how and when to refer patients for psychopharmacological evaluation. They will also understand some of the principles governing such an evaluation and ongoing medication management. They will have learned the names and basic characteristics of some of the medications their patients are likely to be prescribed as well as sources for more information about them. They should feel an increased level of confidence in discussing medication issues with their patients and with the psychiatrists treating them and be better able to navigate the client-therapist-psychiatrist triadic system.

Instructor: Jeffrey Rubin, MD is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (P), Training and Supervising Analyst at the AIP and on the faculty of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is in private practice in New York City and has extensive experience collaborating with psychotherapists on their patients who are considering medication as part of their treatment. He has published papers, lectured and conducted courses on this topic.
