Analytic Listening and Concepts
Instructor: Hadassah Ramin, LCSW
Dates: October 16, 23, 30
November 6, 13, 20
Time: 6:30-8:30 pm
Location: Upper West Side

The initial consultation is the stage on which patients present the cast of their internal objects. How we listen and what we listen for will be explored with a focus on the initial consultation.

Paying close attention to the narrative presented will facilitate identifying the transference, its effect on us – the countertransference – and the way we use this kind of listening as a tool to deepen our understanding of the patient’s relationship to his/her internal objects. This understanding will inform us about how to formulate our interventions in a way that will be useful to the patient.

With the help of readings and clinical vignettes, participants will be sensitized to the difference between hearing and listening, as well as the importance of non-verbal communication.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will learn to distinguish between hearing and listening.

2. Participants will learn to discern the symbolic meaning hidden in the concrete communication.

3. Participants will learn the value of reliance on the induced countertransference as a tool to deepen their understanding of the patients relationship with their internal objects.

Continuing Education Credits:
