The presenters will highlight, based on their experiences in working with transgender patients, the complex contribution of the changing social world and the role of gender regulation, from a psychoanalytic perspective. The focus is also on the clinical process, including ways to prevent misattunement and ruptures due to unrecognized countertransference.

Ken Corbett, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of Psychology at the New York University Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. He is the author of Boyhoods: Rethinking Masculinities (Yale University Press, 2009) and A Murder Over a Girl: Justice, Gender, Junior High (Henry Holt & Company, 2016). Dr. Corbett has a private practice in New York City.
Griffin Hansbury, M.A., LCSW-R is in private practice in New York City. A frequent presenter on transgender issues, his writing on the subject has appeared in several journals, including Psychoanalytic Dialogues, Studies in Gender and Sexuality, and the Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental Health. In 2015, he received the Ralph Roughton Award from the American Psychoanalytic Association for his paper “The Masculine Vaginal: Working with Queer Men’s Embodiment at the Transgender Edge.”
Wendy Olesker, Ph.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and on the Faculty at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. She is a Senior Editor of The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child and on the Editorial Board of The International Journal of Psychoanalysis. It is from her longitudinal research and her analytic experience that she has developed a focus on the developmental process as it impacts understanding gender identity formation in all its manifestations.
Avgi Saketopoulou, Psy.D. is on the faculty of NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, NIP and the Steven Mitchell Center. She serves on the editorial boards of several psychoanalytic journals and has received the Ruth Stein prize, the Ralph Roughton award, the Symonds prize and the annual JAPA prize.
Educational Objectives: After attending this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the potential countertransference problems in working with transgender patients.
2. Describe the psychological, social and biological forces in transgender experience.
