Dr. Janice Lieberman will present the works of a number of women artists who have worked to fight victimization and to use their own aggression in creative and constructive ways. Among those who have depicted violence against women or themselves are Artemisia Gentileschi, Frida Kahlo, Nan Goldin, Kiki Smith, Kara Walker and others. The tendency over the centuries to mask such violence in myth and beauty has evolved into the making of more realistic and raw depictions.
Dr. Danielle Knafo will examine the lives and works of ten pioneering female artists over the last century whose self-representational art challenged the cultural presuppositions and gender stereotypes of their time, while opening up a vista on the feminine experience. Additionally, each of the artists – Käthe Kollwitz, Claude Cahun, Charlotte Salomon, Frida Kahlo, Carolee Schneemann, Hannah Wilke, Ana Mendieta, Adrian Piper, Cindy Sherman, and Orlan – used her art to overcome personal tragedy and trauma, so her work is in simultaneous and dramatic dialogue with both her social world and her personal history.
Janice S. Lieberman, Ph.D is a Fellow and Faculty Member of IPTAR ; Lecturer at the Whitney Museum of American Art; author of Body Talk: Looking and Being Looked at in Psychotherapy and Co- Author of The Many Faces of Deceit: Omissions, Lies and Disguise in Psychotherapy.
Danielle Knafo, Ph.D., is an IPTAR member, professor at LIU-Post’s PsyD Program, and Faculty and Supervisor at NYU Postdoctoral Program. She has written and lectured extensively on psychoanalysis and art, including In Her Own Image: Women’s Self-Representation in Twentieth-Century Art. Her most recent book is The Age of Perversion: Desire and Technology in Psychoanalysis and Art.
