Topic: In this session RFP-C is described and compared to other psychodynamic treatments for children, such as MBT and play therapy

Overview

In RFP-C the therapist communicates to the child that there is meaning to disruptive behavior and that it is safer to act up than feel painful emotions. Addressing the child’s defensive maneuvers to avoid painful affects and addressing transference and countertransference issues are emphasized. Parents are helped to understand the meaning of their children’s behavior and how to approach their children in a more effective way. The similarities between the concept of implicit emotion regulation and defense mechanisms are discussed.

Learning Objectives: After the presentation, the attendees will be able to:

1. Recognize the value of understanding the meaning of a child’s externalizing behaviors

2. Recognize that externalizing behaviors serve as defenses against painful affects

3. Consider the feasibility of applying an operationalized defense-focused approach in a short term psychodynamic psychotherapy

4. Describe the similarities between the concept “defenses” and the neuroscientific concept “Implicit emotional regulation.”

5. Assess the value for the development of psychoanalytic ideas by the use of a treatment manual which has the potential to connect to neuroscience.
