Elise Snyder and fourteen other CAPA analysts and analytic psychotherapists just returned from almost four weeks in China: sightseeing, visiting Tibet and attending conferences in five cities in China were there are large numbers of CAPA students and graduates.
CAPA is now evaluating applications from Chinese mental health professionals for CAPA’s 10th class. More than 400 analysts and analytic psychotherapists are CAPA teachers, treaters and supervisors—many of them APsaA and IPA members. Each year, CAPA receives 150 applications for its four-year psychodynamic psychotherapy program and accepts 40. Each week for thirty weeks each year there are 4 hours of class and one hour of individual supervision. Students are offered the opportunity for distance analysis or psychotherapy. Currently more than 100 Chinese are in 3-5 session/week distance analysis and another 100 in distance psychotherapy.
Several weeks ago Dr. Snyder participated in a panel discussion on Ethics with Dr. Alf Gerlach (Vice President of German-Chinese Academy of Psychotherapy & Co-Chair China Committee) and Dr. Haiyin ZHANG (Director-elect of China Psychoanalysis Committee & Director of Ethical Committee of the Chinese Psychological Society). 144,000 people signed up to hear this discussion.
Fifteen CAPA graduates are in distance and local psychoanalytic training at IPA institutes in the United States. CAPA’s goal is train Chinese mental health professionals to provide good care and to develop the capacity to provide good training to future psychotherapists (and ultimately psychoanalysts) in China.
