Regulation-Focused Psychotherapy for Children (RFP-C) with Externalizing Behaviors: A Psychodynamic Approach

There is a certain amount of therapeutic hopelessness in both parents and mental health clinicians when treating children with externalizing behaviors. These children include those diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), and, more recently, Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD), for which there is currently no broadly accepted psychosocial or pharmacotherapeutic interventions. This hopelessness may be because of the limited therapeutic options and the problematic outcomes when these children grow into adolescence and beyond. This talk describes a systematic approach to the psychodynamic treatment of children with disruptive symptoms, especially those who can be diagnosed with ODD. The principles are described in “Manual of Regulation-Focused Psychotherapy for Children (RFP-C) with Externalizing Behaviors: A Psychodynamic Approach” published by Routledge (2016). A clinical trial has begun at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology.

Dr. Leon Hoffman is a Psychiatrist and Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist; Training and Supervising Analyst in adult, child, and adolescent analysis, co-Director, Pacella Research Center at NYPSI (New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute); faculty at the Icahn Medical School at Mount Sinai; Chief Psychiatrist, West End Day School in NYC; Co-Chair, Committee on Research education (CORE) of the American Psychoanalytic Association. He has long experience in the practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. Over the last 15-20 years he has become very active in the systematic empirical study of basic psychological constructs as well as the systematic empirical study of psychological treatments, especially with children. The development of the Manual for Regulation-Focused Psychotherapy for Children with Externalizing Behaviors (RFP-C): A Psychodynamic Approach, co-written with Timothy Rice and with Tracy Prout, and published by Routledge in 2016, presents, in a systematic fashion, his long clinical experience approaching children and their families with difficult problems. A clinical trial using the manual has begun at Yeshiva University’s School-Clinical Child Psychology Program at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, with Tracy Prout as Principal Investigator. A recent publication in Contemporary Psychoanalysis noted that the Manual “is an unusual and potentially groundbreaking book.” He was honored by the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (2016, August), “An Appreciation of the Many Contributions of Leon Hoffman” (Book Review Section), 64:874-878.
