Reflections on Individuality and Its Implications for Psychotherapy

Overview
Appreciating clinical implications of personality differences has been a central concern for therapists since the early twentieth century. Our patients are unique individuals, with specific, personality-related strengths and weaknesses. Although we may focus on a particular “disorder” that any client describes, we understand that problem in the context of the person’s individuality. Ever since the 1980 revision of the DSM, personality issues have been relegated to “disorder” categories and denoted by the presence or absence of observable traits.
Dr. McWilliams will discuss the history of the concepts of personality structure and disorder and their relevance to practice, covering ten different lenses through which personality has been viewed (temperament, attachment, observed clinical pattern, defensive structure, affective organization, implicit cognition, drive tendencies, self-definition versus self-in-relation orientation, core relational theme, organizing developmental issue). She will discuss the efforts of the DSM-5 task force on personality disorders, which attempted, but failed to achieve, a comprehensive revision of our language for, and underlying assumptions about, problems inhering in personality.
She will also explore tensions between research paradigms and clinical paradigms, between trait-based and theme-based conceptions of personality, and between the assumptions underlying, respectively, the DSM and the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM-2 will be published in January). Examples will be offered of clinical challenges that are usefully faced via an in-depth understanding of a particular client’s personality, whether or not it is “disordered,” and clinically relevant conversation with the audience will be encouraged.
After this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Enumerate ten different clinical perspectives on individuality.
2. Differentiate between understanding personality in terms of traits, even conceived as dimensional, versus in terms of intersubjective themes.
3. Improve their capacity for nuanced formulation of the psychologies of their individual clients.
4. Apply those ten perspectives to their treatment of patients.
Nancy McWilliams teaches at Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Applied & Professional Psychology and practices in Flemington, New Jersey. Author of Psychoanalytic Diagnosis (1994, rev. ed. 2011), Psychoanalytic Case Formulation (1999), and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (2004), and associate editor of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (2006; rev. ed. forthcoming in 2017), she is a former president of Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) of the American Psychological Association. She is one of three psychotherapists chosen by APA Press (2011) to be videotaped for purposes of training in a comparison and contrast of major psychotherapeutic approaches.

In Person: The American Institute for Psychoanalysis (AIP) is located at 329 East 62nd Street (between First and Second Avenues) in The Karen Horney Clinic. All classes, workshops and presentations will be conducted in the auditorium on the first floor of the building. Early registration is encouraged, as space in many classes is limited. In some instances, a student may register immediately before the class; please call the office prior to the first class to confirm schedule and course availability.
Cancellation of Courses
AIP reserves the right to cancel courses. If a course is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, tuition will be refunded by mail. If a course is cancelled, your money will be refunded automatically; no withdrawal form is needed.
Withdrawal and Refund Policy
To withdraw from a course please mail, fax, or email your request to the Continuing Education department at the American Institute for Psychoanalysis. Refunds cannot be issued unless you have notified the department in writing 24 hours before the start of the class. If for any reason a student chooses to withdraw after a program’s commencement no refunds of tuition or program fee will be given. In addition, any student who withdraws before completion of the program will not receive academic credit from the program.
Rules and Regulations for Registration
Students will be charged a $12.00 penalty fee for bounced checks.
Students whose checks have been declined have seven (7) business days upon receipt of notice to pay their accounts or they will be withdrawn from their class(es).
Students will be charged $15.00 for replacement CE certificates.
