“RESPONDING TO NARCISSISM”
Saturday, October 22, 2016 / 8:30 – 11:00 AM
The New Haven Lawn Club
193 Whitney Avenue, New Haven, CT 06511
Michael Feldman will present his work with a narcissistic young woman, proud of her many attractive qualities that can indeed fascinate and intrigue her analyst at times. However, far
from being self-contented, she demonstrates an intense dependence on the responses of others to sustain this narcissistic organization. Her narcissism depends both on her capacity almost to convince herself of her own beauty, talent and goodness, as well as her capacity to draw her object into sharing this view. When she doesn’t succeed in evoking the admiring responses, her narcissistic structure collapses, leaving her, for a while, coping with feelings of inadequacy, guilt and shame. In the sessions he will describe, the patient felt the analyst escaped from this mesmerizing hold, and was able to view her and think about her in his own way.
Discussant: Dr. Kay Long
The Western New England Psychoanalytic Society
and Connecticut Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology
Dr. Long will highlight Dr. Feldman’s contributions to ways of working with dilemmas posed by narcissistic patients. She will also share her own reflections on the clinical material. The audience will be given ample time to offer their own questions and observations and engage the presenters in dialogue.
