This course introduces participants to psychoanalytic theory in general, and to Karen Horney’s theory in particular, to develop awareness of unconscious dynamics and character structure.

Course Objectives:
Develop an understanding of Karen Horney’s psychoanalytic theory, as presented in her book, Our Inner Conflicts.
Appreciate how Horney’s theory differs from early psychoanalytic thinking.
Begin developing proficiency in applying some key concepts of Horney’s theory to clinical material.

Course Format:
The course will be run as a combination of lecture and seminar. The concepts discussed will be applied to clinical material and to a movie (The Squid and the Whale). Participants will be asked to present process from sessions with a patient over a couple of classes. Participants will apply one concept to clinical material from one of their cases in a 4-page paper due on the last day of class.

Presenter:
Michele A. Muñoz, PhD is a licensed psychologist and certified psychoanalyst who currently serves and the Director of the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program of the American Institute for Psychoanalysis, where she also teaches and supervises. She is a former adjunct assistant professor of Brooklyn College, CUNY and former clinical supervisor in the Personal Counseling Program of Brooklyn College, and many other training sites. She maintains a private practice in Manhattan where she provides psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, and also offers clinical consultation to other clinicians in private practice.

· In Person: The American Institute for Psychoanalysis (AIP) is located at 329 East 62nd Street (between First and Second Avenues) in The Karen Horney Clinic. All classes, workshops and presentations will be conducted in the auditorium on the first floor of the building. Early registration is encouraged, as space in many classes is limited. In some instances, a student may register immediately before the class; please call the office prior to the first class to confirm schedule and course availability.

Cancellation of Courses

AIP reserves the right to cancel courses. If a course is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, tuition will be refunded by mail. If a course is cancelled, your money will be refunded automatically; no withdrawal form is needed.

Withdrawal and Refund Policy

To withdraw from a course please mail, fax, or email your request to the Continuing Education department at the American Institute for Psychoanalysis. Refunds cannot be issued unless you have notified the department in writing 24 hours before the start of the class. If for any reason a student chooses to withdraw after a program’s commencement no refunds of tuition or program fee will be given. In addition, any student who withdraws before completion of the program will not receive academic credit from the program.

Rules and Regulations for Registration

Students will be charged a $12.00 penalty fee for bounced checks.
Students whose checks have been declined have seven (7) business days upon receipt of notice to pay their accounts or they will be withdrawn from their class (es).
Students will be charged $15.00 for replacement CE certificates.
