This clinical component of the Claustro-Agoraphobic Delimma Conference (2/10/17) follows a “Klein-Bion Tavistock clinical format”. Through the understanding of the claustro-agoraphobic dilemma, the analyst uses his countertransference to understand what is being said or enacted in the room, in the moment by moment shifts with the patient. By interpreting the primitive anxieties and their function, links to thinking can be made within the “analytic couple”, to facilitate psychic development and integration in the patient. This understanding can be helpful to avoid impasses in the treatment. Clinical material will be presented with “line by line” details and discussion of the “here and now” encounter between the patient and analyst.
Dr. Weiss is an expert in psychosomatic borderline disorders in Germany. Susan Finkelstein has expertise in primitive states of mind. Each of them share a passion for Henry Rey, Herbert Rosenfeld and Melanie Klein.
Prof. Heinz Weiss is the head of the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine of the Robert-Bosch-Krankenhaus, Stuttgart, and one of the Directors of the Sigmund-Freud-Institute, Frankfurt, Germany. He was a visiting scientist at the Adult Department of the Tavistock Clinic, London, and is teaching at the University of Tübingen. In his publications and books he has dealt extensively with the concepts of contemporary Kleinian analysts, especially with pathological organizations of the personality, the concepts of time and space in borderline pathology, projective identification and countertransference and the resulting technical problems.
Debra Neumann, PhD is a psychologist and psychoanalyst. She is a member of the Contemporary Freudian Society, and chair of the DC Professional Development Program Committee and the Multicultural Diversity Committee. She is also a member of the International Psychoanalytic Association and of Division 39 “Psychoanalysis” of the American Psychological Association. Debra has a private practice in the Friendship Heights area of metropolitan Washington DC.
Susan Finkelstein, LCSW is a member of the faculty of The Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research and the Contemporary Freudian Society where she is also a Training and Supervising Analyst at their Training Institute. She is in private practice in psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and couple therapy in New York City. She is a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association and The IPA. She is the director of Understanding Primitive Mental States in NYC, where she coordinates programs that study the nature of primitive anxieties. She teaches about the impact of anxiety and unprocessed aggression on psychic structure. She has studied and presented on psychosomatic conditions, schizoid phenomena, borderline and claustro-agoraphobic psychic spaces.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program participants will be able to:
- Define the “here and now” Kleinian technique of working with patients experiencing claustro-agoraphobic anxieties.
- Recognize defenses in patients centered around this dilemma to avoid experiencing awareness and anxiety.
- Explain the transference and counter-transference dilemmas that cause impasses in the treatment to claustro-agoraphobic anxieties so that possible alternative structures can be worked through in the patient-therapist dyad.
Continuing Education Contact Hours:
Social Workers: The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0087. CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance of the entire program and completed online evaluation form. No partial credits will be offered. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion of this program and online evaluation form, participants will be granted 2.5 CE credits.
