Some of you might be surprised to see an entire issue of The Carlat Psychiatry Report devoted to psychoanalysis. Do psychiatrists still practice it? Does it actually work?
To paraphrase Mark Twain, the demise of psychoanalysis has been greatly exaggerated. The author of two articles in this issue, Dr. Rebecca Twersky-Kengmana, is an early-career psychiatrist, trained in a mainstream residency, and she prescribes medication to the majority of her patients. Yet, about 10% of her practice is psychoanalytic-and she has found that her patients are benefiting tremendously from this very intensive type of therapy.
