A CLINICAL WORKSHOP: TERMINATION RECONSIDERED
SATURDAY, MAY 21, 2016 Presenter: ARLENE KRAMER RICHARDS, Ed.D.

Termination will be discussed from a post-modern point of view. Rules and tradition of how and when to terminate treatments will be outlined in terms of how they play out in particular clinical situations. The explication of unconscious fantasies and the effects of practical external circumstances on the termination decision and on the termination process after the decision will be considered. Participants are invited to bring clinical material related to termination issues.

Participants will:

Define termination in diverse situations.
Relate termination issues to age of patient, length of treatment and intensity of treatment.
Recall and evaluate their own termination experiences and the implications of these for their patients.

ARLENE KRAMER RICHARDS, Ed.D., Training and Supervising Analyst, Faculty: Contemporary Freudian Society; International Psychoanalytical Association. Fellow: IPTAR. North American Representative: International Psychoanalytical Association. Faculty: Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China. Dr. Richards’ psychoanalytic writings have helped clarify and bring to life issues of female development, perversion, loneliness, and the internal world of artists and poets. She published a book of her selected papers entitled Psychoanalysis: Listening to Understand (2013) and was a co-editor of the books Encounters with Loneliness: Only the Lonely (2013) with Lucille Spira and Arthur A. Lynch, and Myths of Mighty Women (2015) with Lucille Spira. Other recent publications include “Gambling and Death” in E. Ronis and L. Shaw’s (Eds.) Greed, Sex, Money, Power and Politics (IP Books, 2011) and “Little Boy Lost” in A. Adelman and K. Malawista’s (Eds.) The Bereaved Therapist: From the Faraway Nearby (Columbia University Press, 2012). She also published The Laundryman’s Granddaughter: Poems by Arlene Kramer Richards (New York: IP Press, 2011).

TIME: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM, Continental breakfast at 9:30 AM

1090 St. Nicholas Avenue (located on West 165th Street between St. Nicholas and Amsterdam Avenues, downstairs level next to Church Santa Rosa de Lima)

FEE: $50 includes breakfast (no fee to MCMH staff)
$30 Student Fee (includes breakfast), with proof of student status
On site registration: $60 or $40 (students with proof of student status)
No fee to MCMH Staff members.

SPACE FOR THE WORKSHOP IS LIMITED. REGISTRATION IS ACCEPTED ON A FIRST-COME FIRST-SERVED BASIS.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS MAY 19, 2016. On-site registration fee applies after that date.

The New York State Education Department has approved this workshop for 3 contact hours (CEUs) for LMSWs and LCSWs. A certificate will be emailed upon request to those who sign the attendance sheet at the end of the workshop, complete an evaluation and pay an administrative fee of $5. There is no charge for those affiliated with MITPP, MCMH or MSPP.
