Translating Object Relations Concepts into Practice with Couples: A Two Part Workshop Series*
*(Each part can be attended as an individual workshop)
Presenter: Judith Siegel, PhD, LCSW

Workshop One: This workshop will focus on the concepts of projective identification and splitting, and examine how they emerge in the couple’s dynamics. We will then examine the ways that the therapist can intervene in the session, engage both parties in examining their relationship from a new perspective, and create changes in the ways that partners relate to each other. The workshop will also consider the therapist’s use of self in conducting the therapy session.

Learning Objectives:

1) To recognize the dynamic of projective identification in a couple’s

interactions

2) To be familiar with splitting and to identify it in the couple’s interaction

3) To understand possible interventions with splitting and projective

identification

4) To consider the therapist’s use of self in the Object Relations Approach to

couples treatment

Date: Friday, May 13, 2016 Time: 9:15 am – 1:15 pm (includes 15 min break)
Location: American Institute for Psychoanalysis, 329 E 62nd St, Rm: Auditorium
Contact Hours: 3.7 Cost: $102.00

Workshop Two: This workshop examines how the relational past influences and unfolds in the couple’s intimate relationship. Neuroscience research has highlighted the importance of emotional memory networks that are stimulated in the process of assigning meaning to current events. In this way, former relationship experiences of self and other are triggered and incorporated into the here-and-now. This workshop will examine the techniques and interventions that the couple therapists can use in helping the couple defuse emotional intensity, and acquire a more thoughtful response that helps them challenge the power of the past. The therapist’s use of self in translating emotions will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

1) To be familiar with memory networks in capturing emotional experiences

from the past

2) To recognize behaviors that indicate emotional overreactions

3) To consider ways to help partners defuse emotional intensity

4) To consider new ways to help partners make sense of the influence of

earlier relationship experiences.
