OPEN HOUSE LUNCHEON & CLINICAL PRESENTATION FOR THOSE CONSIDERING POSTGRADUATE TRAINING
Wednesday, May 11, 2016, 1:00 PM –2:30 PM
READING BETWEEN THE LINES: A CLINICAL PRESENTATION OF AN INITIAL SESSION HIGHLIGHTING THE VALUE OF ANALYTIC LISTENING
B., in her mid 30’s, came to see the therapist following the advice of a psychiatrist who saw her as depressed. Recently divorced, she stated upon arrival, “half my life is over.” She was reluctant, concrete and challenging to engage. The clinical presentation will include verbatim notes from the first session interspersed with the therapist’s reflections on the process as she listened for symbolic meaning hidden in the manifest content as well as in the patient’s body language. This deeper understanding provided a window into the patient’s conflicts and facilitated the therapist’s capacity to formulate interventions that were accessible to the patient.
At the end of this presentation participants will:
1) Understand the difference between hearing and listening.
2) Be sensitized to the value of non verbal communication.
3) Learn the value of reliance on countertransference as a tool to deepen the understanding of the patient’s relationship with her internal objects.
4) Begin to formulate an initial diagnostic impression of the patient presented.
