The Spiral of Loneliness and Alienation
Being lonely, people take comfort in the internet. The internet decreases face-to-face contact with others. The touch and smell of another person gets lost and that makes the person lonelier. Richards will discuss people in this downward spiral through clinical vignettes. Spira will highlight some of the relevant
psychoanalytic and social science literature on loneliness as it relates to practice.

Alienation and the Allure of Cults
Groups that promise community and transformation become cultic when they are led by traumatizing narcissists. A variety of factors that cause a sense of alienation contribute to the vulnerability that leads some individuals to seek an antidote to their suffering by becoming followers in such groups. This presentation explores the relational system of subjugation in which cultic leaders ensnare their followers.

Alienated Youth, Mentally Ill, or Identified with Violent Parents?: No Fault Parenting in a Violent Society
The term “alienation” has been applied to youth at particular moments in history to understand social positioning, individual and collective action, youth violence in the popular culture (e.g., media), and in social and psychological theory. Identifications with cultures of violence, including parental cultures (i.e., “norm circles”), might offer explanatory accounts of violent action. Data from the presenter’s study of the manifestos left by youth shooters will be discussed.
After attending these presentations, participants will be able to
– Identify different types of loneliness and distinguish them from other symptoms/disorders.
– Describe the healthy and less healthy defenses used to cope with loneliness including use of the internet.
– Identify the traumatizing narcissist and the nature of subjugation trauma which he or she inflicts on others.
– Define the dynamics of the relational system of the leaders and followers in cultic groups.
– Describe youth violence in a culture of violence.
– Explain youth identifications with parental violence.
Moderator: Cathy Siebold
Each presentation will be followed by a dialogue among the panelists and audience.
