OPEN HOUSE LUNCHEON & CLINICAL PRESENTATION FOR THOSE CONSIDERING POSTGRADUATE TRAINING
Wednesday, March 16, 2016, 3:30 PM –5:00 PM
TREATMENT OF A VIOLENT ADOLESCENT: TRANSFORMING DEFIANCE INTO COLLABORATION
When 15 year-old Angela came to treatment she was physically attacking her peers, verbally assaulting authority figures and suffering from debilitating depression. Initially her engagement in treatment was reluctant and avoidant. She announced that this therapist was her sixth therapist. A month into treatment Angela was arrested for assaulting a peer from school and verbally assaulting a police officer. This presentation will demonstrate how, through empathic understanding, genuine engagement, and a focus on Angela’s capabilities —rather than her disruptive behavior—therapist and patient were able to transform this adolescent’s aggression into a sense of agency, and develop her ability to reflect so that she no longer felt the need to reactively assault others.
At the end of this presentation participants will be able to (1) Understand the importance of an empathic listening stance for clinical practice; (2) Understand the difference between leading and trailing edge interpretations, and (3) Learn a self-psychological perspective on aggression.
