THE METROPOLITAN CENTER FOR MENTAL HEALTH and THE METROPOLITAN INSTITUTE
FOR TRAINING IN PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY
invite you to A CLINICAL WORKSHOP: SELF-DISCLOSURE WITH GAY AND LESBIAN PATIENTS: YES, NO OR HOW MUCH?
SATURDAY, MARCH 19, 2016
Presenter: GINO BENZA, L.C.S.W.
We all work with patients of various genders and sexual orientations. Most of us have had various experiences with self-disclosure, which often brings up potent feelings for both the therapist and patient. Many patients come to treatment with the idea that only a therapist that is like them, or has possibly had some similar, if not the same issues that they have in their journey can help them. Some desire that the therapist ‘know’ what it is like to have had various experiences seemingly unique to the LGBT community such as coming out, oppression, bullying, discrimination and subtle and not so subtle forms of homophobia. This workshop explores the issue of self-disclosure when working with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender patients. Therapists often struggle with patients’ desire to know personal information about them at various points during the treatment, whether it is sexual orientation, experience working with the LGBT community, or attitudes about sex and sexuality. This has meaning for both the therapist and patient. Variables include when the issue comes up in treatment and what material (if any) has preceded the question. Other factors include the impact on the treatment of whether the therapist decides to disclose or keep exploring the patient’s request and helping to make meaning of the question with the patient. Dynamic treatment issues related to transference, countertransference and resistance will be included.
The format of the workshop will include theoretical information regarding thought on this topic. Clinical material will be presented representing various aspects of self-disclosure and the impact on treatment. Attendees are invited to come with their own clinical examples, questions, and thoughts on this topic. This workshop will deal with both the gay and straight clinician facing this challenging issue in treatment.
Participants will:
Gain an overview of classic and contemporary thought on self-disclosure.
Acquire skills to strengthen their own clinical decision making regarding self-disclosure in general and specifically with the LGBT community.
Describe how the decision to disclose or not impacts on treatment and clinical outcomes.
Evaluate technical approaches to exploring their LGBT patients’ desire to know personal information.
