This course will be a discussion of chapters from Dr. Arnold Richard’s book Psychoanalysis: Critical Conversations. Topics include a discussion of the historical context of the current state of psychoanalysis; a critique of psychoanalytic theories from four main perspectives: the self psychologies; the hermeneutics and social constructivist perspectives; the interpersonal and relational perspectives; the ego psychological and contemporary conflict theories. It also includes a discussion of how clinical theory and technique interact.

Arnold Richards, MD was Editor of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA) from 1994 to 2003 and before that he was an editor of TAP. He is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. He is a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association and received its Distinguished Contributor award in 2004. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, Division 39, Section 10, the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute, the New York Freudian Society, the Psychoanalytic Association of New York the Western New York Psychoanalytic Society, the Lake Oscawana Psychoanalytic Society and Honorary Member of the American Institute of Psychoanalysis/Karen Horney Clinic and the New Jersey Psychoanalytic Society.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. identify four categories of psychoanalytic theories.
2. identify three aspects of Dr. Richard’s critique of each theory.
3. identify and articulate the theory upon which their own clinical training and work is based.
4. identify and articulate three dialectics in psychoanalytic theory and articulate their own position in these dialectics: orthodox to radical; pluralism to uniformity; and free exploration to dogmatism.
