A contemporary focus on the functioning of the mind from the perspective of Modern Conflict Theory, with emphasis on Brenner’s revisions of traditional structural theory and a new appreciation of the ideas of evolutionary biology for understanding the functioning of the mind.

Dr. Ian Buckingham is President of NYPSI and was formerly Director of NYPSI’s Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program. He is also on the faculty of NYPSI and NYU Medical Center.

Reading List

“The Mind in Conflict” by Charles Brenner, IUP, 1982.

Students should read Introduction chapter for first class.

Course Objectives

After attending this course, participants will be able to:

1. Explain contemporary theory in the functioning of the mind, specifically from the perspective of Modern Conflict Theory.

2. Describe Charles Brenner’s revisions of traditional structural theory.
