It is normal upon the birth of one’s child to feel that this child is special – a wonder, incomparable, a miracle, in effect, perfect. It is also normal for this feeling to recede over time and to be replaced by the understanding that one’s child is subject to human limitations, like all children. But the overvaluation of one’s own child persists, either in greater or lesser degree. It serves parents’ need for self-esteem, among other things. We can see it manifested in a certain cultural emphasis on raising our children to be perfect. We will address the questions of what drives this phenomenon, what are its effects, and what we should do about it.
Dr. David Sawyer is a psychiatrist, child and adolescent psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst who is in full time private practice in NYC and in Westchester. He is a member of New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute, where he is Co-Program Coordinator of the Child and Adolescent Track of the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program; and is Clinical Instructor of Psychiatry at Cornell University Medical College. He has taught child development for many years.
“Dialogues on…” events are geared towards professionals and parents who are involved with the care of children in the school and home environments. Educators, school administrators, community leaders, grandparents and parents are welcome.
The “Dialogues on…” series is made possible by a generous donation to NYPSI from The Poses Family Foundation. Additional funding was received from The James and Judith K. Dimon Foundation in honor of Ms. Themis Dimon.
NO CME OR CE CREDIT WILL BE OFFERED.
