“How Neurotic Manifestations of Psychic Determinism Inhibited an Opportunistic Business Partnership”
Jim will share his experiences working with a privately held firm over the past year and show how

a) pivotal childhood experiences determined current behavior
b) projection and displacement defenses distorted and crippled perceptions of the partners and their ability to communicate
c) the equivalent of the tradition therapeutic concept of “working through” can indeed happen within the context of a dynamic business consultation

Teaching and Learning Method

· Lecture, Presentation of Case material, and Discussion

Learning Objectives:

Participants understand and be able to translate

· How the advisor assumes various roles throughout the consultation

· How a dysfunctional partnership become functional

· How the critical and crucial impact of a CEO/Founding partner dynamically affects the organization

· How transference and countertransference emerge and are dealt with

· How boundary and frame concerns are both the same and different than in a traditional psychoanalytic relationship

Jim Oher is a principal and advisor at The Boswell Group, a psychodynamic management-consulting firm that advises CEOS, corporate directors and other senior leaders on people and culture issues at the top of the organization. Jim has a diverse background as a corporate leader, executive consultant, accredited psychotherapist/psychoanalyst and group trainer/facilitator. In addition to individuals and teams, Jim has worked with the boards of directors to review their structure, policies, strategies and goals. Jim is also the author and editor of several books on business workplace dynamics.

Note: CE Credits Social Workers: Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, Inc. (IPTAR) SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0226. (1.5 ) CE credits will be granted to participants who have registered , have documented evidence of attendance of the entire program and have completed the on-line evaluation form. Upon completion of the evaluation form a Certificate of Completion will be emailed to all participants who comply with these requirements. CE Administrative Fee for those requesting CE Credits: Please bring $15.00 check payable at the event made out to Iptar with request for CE Credit at bottom of check.

The Case Conference series consists of a presentation of case material from an organizational consultation, an executive coaching engagement, or a presentation relevant to systems-psychodynamic thinking and practice. The format is interactive and all who attend are invited to present.
