Contemporary Psychoanalytic Field Theory at CFS

Contemporary Psychoanalytic Field Theory
Four-Session Program (6 Contact Hours)
Presenter: Montana Katz, PhD
Dates: Tuesdays, February 2, 9, 16 and 23, 2016
Time: 7:30 – 9:00pm
Location: 415 Central Park West, NYC

This program will discuss central and emerging themes, concepts and techniques of contemporary psychoanalytic field theory. Readings will be selected from the growing body of research and writing on the subject. Psychoanalytic field theory offers new and creative approaches both to psychoanalytic theory and especially to clinical practice. It offers new ways of thinking about psychoanalytic process, different forms of analytic listening, and different techniques than other psychoanalytic models.

The three principal models of contemporary psychoanalytic field theory will be discussed in this program. These models derive from the work of Madeleine and Willy Baranger, Antonino Ferro, Giuseppe Civitarese, and Edgar Levenson amongst others. Core concepts of these models include the bi-personal analytic setting, the psychoanalytic field, the dream function of sessions, and novel concepts of unconscious and metaphoric processes. These and other concepts will be explored. A focus of the program will be on the clinical tools and techniques of each of the psychoanalytic field theory models. Clinical material will be used in each meeting to demonstrate therapeutic processes conducted by psychoanalysts who work in field theory models.

The program will include comparative discussions of the three models of contemporary psychoanalytic field theory. There are both similarities and differences between the three models. These will be discussed, especially highlighting the implications for differences in clinical work. In particular, the different techniques involved in analytic listening, variations in the analyst’s interventions and interpretation, and alternative conceptions of the goals of psychoanalytic processes will be explored making use of the ample clinical material in the literature.

Readings will include papers by Madeleine and Willy Baranger, Giuseppe Civitarese, Antonino Ferro, and Edgar Levenson.
